Happy Autumn, everyone! How are you all doing?

It’s time for a long-overdue Mayor’s Corner. Thank you for your votes of confidence last April! I really appreciate them, as I appreciate so many things about our community.

If you haven’t already, I hope that you choose to vote in the November 5th election. This is a very important one – as are all elections. Please take the time to research all the people and measures on the ballot so you can be well informed when you vote. Some ballot measures are confusing, and you want to ensure that you vote in the way that you intend.

If you wonder which Presidential candidate’s economic plans are better for your country, ask an economist for their opinion! If you are concerned with immigration, please reflect on your ancestors’ (or your own) emigration to the USA, and how your family members were welcomed or not welcomed. Whatever happens during and after the election, I believe that our community does not have to descend into the division that has infected our country. Though we do not agree on everything, we all have a lot in common and a lot to be grateful for.

My second term has been a busy one. Out of the gate, one of the Trustees resigned, and we went through an appointment process to appoint Tierney Maris to the Board of Trustees. Tierney has been a great addition with her thoughtful input and calm presence.

Town Administrator Miranda Fisher took a step forward in her career to become the Town Manager for Camp Verde, AZ. Thank you Miranda for your many years of hard work for our community. We had over 300 applicants for our vacant Town Administrator position and went through an intense interview process. We hired Jonathan Cain, who had been the Deputy Town Director for the City of Idaho Springs. Jon brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm with him to the Town of Nederland. Welcome Jon, we are lucky to have you leading our team.

Here’s a few highlights from the past six months:

TEENS, Inc. Childcare Center – The Board of Trustees approved a Special Review Use Application for TEENS, Inc for a 99-year lease for the old Town Shop site, to build and operate a childcare center. Afterwards, a referendum brought the decision to the community via special election. About 72% of voters voted in favor of the TEENS, Inc lease. As of now, the childcare center is in the design phase.

Summer Concert Series – Thank you to the Town of Nederland Parks Department, the Nederland Downtown Development Authority, and Time Served Productions for some high-quality and entertaining music events for the community. This first year was very successful, and we look forward to seeing how this event evolves in the future.

Boulder County Sherrif’s Office – Our sergeant Asa Merriam received a promotion with BCSO and Sergeant Jennifer Mendez has stepped in to lead the BCSO Deputies working in Nederland.

Housing Coordinator – We received a Local Planning Capacity Grant to hire a Housing Coordinator, who we are sharing with the Town of Lyons.

Multijurisdictional Housing Authority – We received a grant and are in a Feasibility Study to determine if we can create a Multijurisdictional Housing Authority for the Peak-to-Peak region with Gilpin County and the Town of Lyons.

October 29, 2024 was our first 2025 Budget Work Session presentation and discussion.

November 7, 2024 (TONIGHT!): The Warren Miller Move “Seventy-Five: A New Chapter” is showing at the Backdoor Theatre. Please join us to enjoy the move and participate in this annual fundraiser to support the Nederland Middle School High School Alpine and Nordic Ski Teams. I am the coach of the Nederland Middle School Nordic Ski Team.

November/December Meetings: We will be discussing the 2025 Town Budget, with a Public Hearing and Approval, the Comprehensive Plan, Downtown Subarea Plan, Multimodal Transportation Plan, Board of Trustees Rules of Procedure & Electronic Meeting Participation Review, and other items.

Please let us know what you think! We encourage all comments, and we need you to let us know if there are problems. We read all emails, letters, and comments that we received and weigh them all as we make decisions.
