The Town's Advisory Boards and Commission help the Board of Trustees guide the town into the future. Each board is is comprised of passionate people that are dedicated to making a difference within the community. This community-based approach to governing is what makes Nederland such a unique and wonderful place.

How Seats are Filled

Members of the Board of Trustees serve four-year terms, and are elected by the people during the Municipal Election, which takes place every two years.

Advisory Board Vacancies will be posted on the town website under the news section, on the respective board's webpage, at Town Hall, and the Post Office whenever a seat is open. New members are appointed by the Board of Trustees during their next regular meeting.

Interested parties should complete the corresponding application below and return it to the Town Clerk, along with a resume noting your experience. Applications can be submitted via email, by mail, or dropped off in person at Town Hall.

Who's Eligible to Serve on the Board of Trustees?

In order to be eligible to run for the position of Mayor or Trustee, each candidate must first meet the following criteria:

  • I am a citizen of the Untied States
  • I am at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • I have been  a resident of the Town of Nederland for twelve (12) consecutive months immediately preceding the election
  • I am a registered elector in the municipality

Each board and commission has a different set of membership requirements. Please make sure you meet all necessary requirements before joining:

Board of Zoning Adjustment

The Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) is an appointed board which reviews zoning variance requests. Board members must be residents of the Town of Nederland  and serve for a 5-year term. The term of an alternate is 2 years.

Nederland Downtown Development Authority

The Nederland Downtown Development Authority (NDDA) has the authority to study, prioritize and propose development projects. Applicants must either be a property owner or a business lessee operating within the Downtown Development district. Board members serve four-year terms.

Planning Commission

The Planning Commission (PC) is an appointed board which reviews developments and land use codes specific to the PC's purview in Land Use and Zoning. Board members must be legal residents of the Town of Nederland and serve for a 4-year term.

Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Advisory Board

The Town of Nederland Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Advisory Board (PROSAB) is an appointed board that advises the Board of Trustees on all issues pertaining to parks, recreational areas and facilities, open space, trails, and promoting healthy local ecosystems. Three members shall be residents of the Town of Nederland, and three members may be residents of the Nederland area at-large. One Alternate may be appointed by the Mayor with approval of the Board of Trustees. Board members serve three-year terms.

Sustainability Advisory Board

The Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) is an appointed board that advises the Board of Trustees on issues of sustainability, conservation, and renewable energy in Town facilities and operations. Priority will be given to Nederland residents and/or members with sustainability experience. One Alternate will be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Board of Trustees. SAB members serve for three-year terms.
