About the Sustainability Advisory Board

The Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) is an appointed board that advises the Board of Trustees to effectuate improvements to Town codes, operations and facilities on matters regarding sustainable practices, resource conservation, renewable energy, waste reduction, public outreach and education. SAB members serve for three-year terms.

Green Business Program

Status Summary: 

Purpose of a green business program

  1. Reduce GHGs in the commercial sector: Motivate businesses to save energy, reduce waste, increase water efficiency and increase use of sustainable transportation.
  2. Build a movement: Help businesses showcase their accomplishments in sustainability to customers, employees and the broader community.
  3. Maximize program efficiency: Leverage existing capacities of town staff, advisory boards, county programs, chambers of commerce, and other partners to collaborate on a program no one town could achieve on their own.

Proposed timeline:

  1. October / November: program setup and design
  2. January – July: application period and advising 
  3. August: recognition events and media

Present Green Business Program to NDDA (October) 
Gain approval from BOT (October/November)

Current Projects

Sunshare

Status Summary: 

The purpose of this effort is to inform residents and business of opportunities to participate and subscribe to community solar gardens. Sunshare has been identified as a potential opportunity that would help Nederland towards its’ 100% renewable energy goal. 

Accomplishments:

Sunshare and SAB presented to the Nederland BoT on August 17th

Next steps: 

Sunshare and Wild Bear will market program to residents and businesses in the area. Town staff will post a link to Sunshare’s sign up page on the Town website. 

SAB will be monitoring this effort to see how best the Town and SAB can support this effort. 

Current Projects

Community Solar Garden (CSG) Feasibility

Status Summary: 

The purpose of this effort is to identify an area(s) for the development of a community solar garden. Ideally, this would be used for residents with high energy burden. Information pertaining to each location can be found using this link.

Accomplishments:

Initial meeting with Namaste Solar to discuss the development of a community solar garden at 750 West 5th street. 

Next steps: 

Determine whether the Town will consider a CSG at this property.
Continue discussions with Namaste Solar.

2018 Building Codes

Status Summary: 

Board of Trustees has directed staff to implement the 2018 Building Codes with amendments to improve energy conservation and building efficiency. 
Boulder County BuildSmart program has been compared to 2018 Building Codes. This report can be found

Contact contractors and developers to obtain feedback on proposed energy codes.

Following on a year of successful campaigning and community excitement, the SAB plans to continue to advance our goals in 2019 with three focuses: Community Agriculture, Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, and Waste Diversion.
