Temperatures in Nederland are expected to plummet to -20°F this weekend. The Nederland Utilities Department urges residents to take precautions to prevent water pipes from freezing and avoid costly damage. Here are some essential tips:
1. Locate Your Water Shut-Off Valve
Be prepared to quickly turn off your water in case of a pipe burst. The valve is often in your basement or crawlspace near the water meter. If you don’t have one installed, consider contacting a plumber.
2. Inspect Your Home for Vulnerable Areas
Check for rooms that are uninsulated, lack heat, or have drafts from doors and windows. Crawlspaces, basements, and rooms open to the elements are particularly at risk.
3. Eliminate Access to Cold Air
Seal any openings near doors, windows, and exterior walls. Repair broken windows and ensure walls are properly insulated to keep out freezing drafts.
4. Wrap Exposed Pipes and Water Meters
Use insulation designed for water pipes, available at most hardware stores. Don’t forget to protect your water meter—it’s your responsibility to prevent it from freezing.
5. Disconnect Outdoor Hoses
Shut off and drain outdoor faucets and hoses. Open outside faucets after draining to avoid trapped water from freezing and damaging pipes.
6. If Pipes Freeze:
- Turn off your faucet.
- Slowly apply heat to the frozen section using a hair dryer (never an open flame).
- Continue until water pressure is restored.
Taking precautions now can save you from major headaches later. Stay safe, warm, and prepared for this extreme weather!
