Starting next week, the Nederland Utilities department will begin their annual hydrant flushing, starting in the neighborhoods near the Elementary School. Text, phone, and email notifications will be sent out ahead of time to targeted areas impacted by hydrant flushing.
Fire hydrant flushing is a vital annual program to maintain high quality drinking water. Annual flushing removes buildup in fire hydrants and water mains and brings fresh water into pipes that are used infrequently. Every fire hydrant is also inspected for proper operation to ensure reliable use for fire protection.
Fire hydrant flushing may cause a temporary discoloration of water and a temporary reduction in water pressure. This discoloration is caused by mineral deposits being stirred up and is safe to use. Although not common, if you do experience discolored water, you can flush it by running cold water through a faucet.
