Welcome to the Mayor's Corner (AKA The Billy Pulpit)! About once a month, Mayor Billy Giblin will release a newsletter to connect the community and the Board of Trustees. Check out the first Mayor's Corner below:

Nederland Mayor's Corner (AKA "The Billy Pulpit")

Hello everyone! I'm Billy Giblin, our new Mayor of Nederland. Thank you for all your support over these last few months. I am honored and grateful that you elected me as Mayor. It has been a pleasure to meet and talk with so many great people in our community. I look forward to meeting and working with more and more of you as Mayor.

A big thanks to Tom, Steve, Riley and Jesse for a positive and constructive campaign. We were able to discuss many important issues with may folks in the community. I learned a lot from each of the candidates and from many of you throughout the summer.

Last Thursday, 9/1, I attended the Community Visioning Workshop on Wildfire Resilience in Nederland at the Nederland Community Center. There were around 40 people there and it was an interesting process to brainstorm and discuss opportunities and obstacles to increasing Wildfire Resilience in Nederland. We are grateful for the CU Boulder graduate students and other key partners who are helping us as we update Nederland's Community Wildfire Protection Plan.

This past Tuesday 9/6, Jesse Seavers was sworn in as Trustee and I was sworn in as Mayor. It was an honor to take my Oath of Office, and I take it seriously. I was psyched that my Mom (almost 89) and my sisters and their families were able to attend virtually, and my wife, kids, brother and some friends were there in person.

There is a lot of work to do, and I feel very excited and optimistic. I intend to guide the BOT to be thoughtful, methodical, thorough and careful in our process as we make decisions. We need to keep the horse in front of the card and not make quick, rash, reactive decisions that can have unintended and irreversible consequences for our future. We also need to hear from all of you to guide us as we make decisions that will affect us all.

In Tuesday's 9/6 meeting, the BOT decided:

  • on the tax ballot measures which will be on November's ballot. None of the votes were unanimous. Personally, I am glad to see non-unanimous votes as that seems much more consistent with the will of the residents of Nederland.
  • to move the public hearing date for the supplemental budget #2 to September 20th.

The BOT ten discussed:

  • the Nederland Food Pantry relocation project concept
  • the status of recruitment efforts for the Ned Police Department

The BOT meets on t 1st and 3rd (and work session as needed on the 2nd and 4th) Tuesday nights at 7pm at the Nederland Community Center. Throughout September/October, we will be working on the NPD, Town budget, the annexation and IGA, and filling the one remaining Trustee vacancy.

Please LET US KNOW what you think about any or all of these issues, or any non-agenda items. We read all the emails and letters that we receive and weigh them all as we make decisions.

There is an opening on the Planning Commission for one seat and openings on the Board of Zoning Adjustment for two seats and one alternate. Please consider applying to join this Board or this Commission. We need you, it's interesting, you will learn a lot, and you will learn the satisfaction of being more involved with our community. Applications for these vacancies were released on 9/7/22 with a due date of 9/28/22.
