The Town of Nederland is accepting applications for a full-time Operator I in the Utilities Department

This benefitted position will be paid $20/hour and perform duties related to the installation, maintenance, and repair of all public utility services.

Responsibilities include: water treatment, transmission, and distribution; wastewater collection and treatment; storm water collection; meter installations; and heavy equipment operation and maintenance.

  • Previous experience with water/wastewater, power tools, data collection, GIS, math, science, and the operation/maintenance of heavy equipment is a plus

The Town of Nederland is looking for a contracted, temporary Sustainability Coordinator.

The Town of Nederland is seeking a qualified applicant to fill a part-time (averaging 20 hours per week), temporary contracted Sustainability Coordinator to guide and assist in meeting its sustainability goals. Major goals of Nederland are renewable energy, fossil fuel reduction, zero waste/waste reduction, and local economy & food systems. This is a contract position that is set to end after approximately one year, with a possibility to renew based upon funding availability and the achievement of expected position outcomes. Anticipated dates of contracted employment are February 1st, 2022 - March 31st, 2023.

Ideal candidates will have demonstrated skills & experience in the following areas:

  • Sustainability Program Management & Development: coordinating programs and events with other departments and community groups, speaking to the public as an expert in the field, and identifying/developing external funding opportunities, including funding from grants and incentive programs.
  • Organization & Reporting: maintaining a variety of regular reports to ensure procedural adherence and overall competencies, including staff reports, programming and meeting reports, grant applications, financial records, volunteer coordination, etc.
  • Local Working Sustainable Knowledge: Current and previous experience working with mountain communities in desired areas of focus (energy, food & waste initiatives).

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge: 

  • Demonstrates understanding of environmental management, climate change, energy efficiency, renewable resources, contract and project management, and sustainability principles.
  • A degree or seeking a degree in Environmental Studies, Environmental Science, or a related sustainability field. 2-4 years’ work experience in a related field may substitute education requirements.
  • Familiarity & experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Drive and other editing platforms.
  • Expertise with Social Media products and practices.
  • Experience grant writing and related administration.
  • Experience in volunteer coordination and working with volunteer boards in small communities.
  • Experience in project management.

Skills:

  • Effective and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Researching opportunities to achieve & improve upon current sustainability practices.
  • Researching funding opportunities.
  • Developing program timelines, logistical planning, and organization.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrates a dedication to sustainability and the natural environment.
  • Demonstrates a dedication to transparency and communication with the Public.
  • Demonstrates leadership in the coordination of complex projects.
  • Performs professional, technical, innovative and analytical work to advance the Town's plans for a sustainable future.

  • Ability to research, analyze and present data related to sustainability, energy efficiency, and conservation.
  • Ability to define goals, performance metrics, and a long-range plan for sustainability.
  • Experience working in deadline-driven environments.
  • Ability to balance conflicting priorities issued by bodies of power and influence.
  • Ability to attend evening events including weekends for various Town board meetings and special events.

Position Duties

The Sustainability Coordinator must work collaboratively with current staff and volunteers.  This position will be required to:

  • Report their progress monthly to the BOT and Town Staff.
  • Attend and report on SAB meetings, other Town meetings as needed, and sustainability initiatives to the BOT and Town Staff.
  • Work with Town Staff to maintain physical and electronic records for all sustainability projects, including tracking goals and achievements.
  • Work with the Town Treasurer to maintain appropriate financial records for sustainability projects.
  • Research and apply for grants and other funding for sustainability projects.
  • Administer and coordinate all sustainability project grants, including evaluation of the programs upon completion.
  • Works with Town Staff and Town Boards to identify and prioritize sustainability activities, garners their support for completion of projects and reports on progress either in print on the Town’s website and/or in a presentation to the BOT.
  • Liaisons with CC4CA, Xcel Energy, and other partners to continue to develop shared goals and projects.
  • Works with other mountain communities to share ideas and develop partner projects.  The ideal candidate could hold a part-time position with Nederland and a part-time position with a neighboring community.

Possible Position Outcomes

  • Acquire $25,000 or more in grant funding for program years.
  • Produce a report at the conclusion of the job contract that outlines the Sustainability Coordinator Achievements.
  • Produce a report at the conclusion of the job contract identifying three main Sustainability Goals for 2021-2023.
  • Maintain working partnerships and track related achievements.
  • Choose a focus, e.g.:
    • Develop the baseline Waste Diversion Rates for Nederland and Develop a preliminary plan to increase Waste Diversion, including Collaboration with local businesses, non-profits, and support organizations.
    • Develop an Ecosystem Assessment for the Nederland Area, including foodshed, areas for Environmental Protection, carrying capacity, key agricultural lands, and more.
    • Develop the baseline Carbon Emissions of Nederland and Develop a prioritized list of the highest carbon emission sources to improve/eliminate.

  • The Sustainability Coordinator will need access to the following equipment:
    • Computer (prefer a laptop)
    • Phone (prefer a cell phone)
    • Reliable transportation (and a valid driver’s license)

Compensation

  • The Sustainability Coordinator will be paid $2,812.50 per month for 25-30 hours of work per week.

Volunteer Opportunities

Nederland Police Department Seeks Operations Support Unit (OSU) Volunteer

The Nederland Police Department is looking for a local volunteer for its Operations Support Unit (OSU). The OSU Volunteer would work for the Nederland Police Department and provide support to the daily operations of the NPD. The preferred candidate would be a local Nederland area resident that is able to provide a minimum of 8 hours per week of unpaid volunteer service, with the understanding that additional hours may be needed on a case by case basis.
